Beth Turner, Psy.D.

Owner

California Licensed Psychologist (PSY28721)

Dr. Turner (she/her) supports self-empowerment, healing, and fulfilling livelihoods. Her approach is guided by multicultural feminist, liberation-based, and resiliency models.

Dr. Turner has always innately understood that we live a valued life through who we surround ourselves with and the relationships that we nurture. She obtained formal education through a Clinical-Community Psy.D. program, which catapulted her professional work interest in community-based prevention and postvention to support mental health and well-being.

She completed an apprenticeship in outreach and prevention during her internship year, co-creating and facilitating numerous projects within a campus community of over 20,000. This opportunity provided a foundation in embedding mental well-being into communities, and valuable learning experiences in assessing needs, co-implementing creative ways to provide support and programs, surveying and reporting feedback, and following up with stakeholders. During her professional career, she developed a new role of Outreach Coordinator within a smaller, suburban college campus. This involved defining the role, designing and implementing a formal community outreach program, and providing hundreds of trainings and programs to foster mental health.

She has provided mental health support, speaking engagements, and trainings to thousands of people in numerous topics. She has worked with students, educators, activists, small and large organizations; working with groups as small as 3 and as large as 800. She trained hundreds of people as a certified Mental Health First Aid trainer, has educated people on various mental health and diversity topics, and has led programs to support the unique group needs related to mental health.

Dr. Beth Turner is uniquely trained and experienced with expertise in community-centered mental health and well-being.

"I believe a trustworthy and safe relationship is most important for creating working relationships. I work collaboratively, valuing you and your groups as a whole, including lived experiences, intersecting identities, and worldviews, values, and beliefs. I am constantly striving for cultural humility and advocacy, to work toward liberation and decolonization practices. I draw from science-backed, evidence-based interventions and promote compassion, connection, and laughter."

Professional Training and Experience Dr. Turner has over a decade of experience working as a psychologist. She was trained and has worked at a range of settings, including the LA LGBT Center, psychiatric inpatient hospital, and university counseling centers. Her consulting and training skills stem from clinical and supervisory work, as well as several years as outreach coordinator and director. Education: She grew up in Kentucky and graduated from Western Kentucky University with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and a minor in Sexuality Studies. She moved to LA to complete a Doctorate in Clinical-Community Psychology (Psy.D.) from University of La Verne. Her strengths-based, liberatory approach was even evidenced in her dissertation research, which involved a study of how lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals use humor to cope.

Want to know more about Dr. Turner personally? "I'm a married, pansexual, White ciswoman, and understand firsthand the struggles of mental health and chronic health challenges, burnout, and trauma.  I especially love working with farms, ranches, rescues, and natural habitat caretakers to provide mental health trainings and workshops to benefit others' mental well-being in relation to nature and animals. I’m a life-long lover of animals, and current caretaker for two rabbits, a small black cat, and an aquarium with a few small tetras and a golden dojo loach. I grew up around many different animals, and appreciate how much we can learn from them, connect and form meaningful relationships with and through them. I have learned much about myself and how I approach relationships through my bonds with animals. I consider myself a healing healer, nerd, weirdo, trying to live a life of passion and enjoyment. I also love learning, nature, photography, painting, time at the pool and on the beach, playing tabletop/board games, tattoos, concerts, exploring and traveling, all things food and drinks, and The Dark Crystal, the Muppets (ok, almost anything Henson), drag, and many different TV shows, movies, and video games (especially N64)."
